There are 3 or sometimes 4 tests involved in every tag on an appliance.  Every appliance is tested with the following tests

Single Insulated Equipment: Double Insulated Equipment Extension leads, Power Boards, IEC leads: Safety Switches RCDs:
Test 1 Visual Inspection Visual Inspection Visual Inspection Visual Inspection
Test 2 Earth Continuity/Bond1 Not Required Earth Continuity/Bond1 Pushbutton Test
Test 3 Insulation Resistance2 or Leakage Current Load Test3 Insulation Resistance2 or Leakage Current Load Test4 Insulation Resistance2 Leakage Current Time Trip Test 0deg5
Test 4 n/a n/a Polarity Test Leakage Current Time Trip Test 180 deg5

    Electrical Test Values:

1Earth Continuity – 200mA DC is passed between earth pin of plug and probe on equipment for 5 sec.  Limit for pass is less than .1 ohm.  This test only applies to Class 1 equipment and leads and powerboards.
2Insulation Resistance – 500V DC is applied between the earth pin and both the active and neutral pins of the appliance plug for 5 sec.  Limit for pass must be greater than 1 MOhm.
3Class 1 Leakage Current Load Test –  This test is conducted where power is required to close the on off switch eg computer or monitor.  Current flowing between active and earth is measured when powered up on 240VAC for 5 sec.  Limit for pass is less than .7mA
4Class 2 Leakage Current Load Test –  This test is conducted where power is required to close the on off switch eg computer or monitor.  Current flowing between active and earth is measured when powered up on 240VAC for 5 sec.  Limit for pass is less than .25mA
5RCD Trip Time – A 30mA rms sinusoidal current is passed through the earth conductor and the time is measured for the RCD to trip starting at the positive half cycle.  The RCD is reset and the time is measured for the RCD to trip starting at the negative half cycle.  Limit for pass is less than 150ms for a 30mA unit and less than 40ms for a 10mA unit (hospital grade).
